Prevention and the Affordable Care Act: New Roles and Responsibilities

The CPHA-N Annual Meeting and Scientific Session—May 1st, from 8:30 am to 4 pm.

This conference explores the implications for our public health workforce in the context of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

Opening welcome and introductions by Stefano Bertozzi, Dean, UCB School of Public Health

APHA President Joyce Gaufin will deliver a keynote speech, entitled “Public Health in Transition: Embracing and Preparing for the Future.”

Presentations and panels to include:

  • Performance and Accreditation—Loriann DeMartini, Pharm D, Deputy Director, Office of Quality Performance and Accreditation at CDPH discussing the state health department accreditation and its impact on workforce issues.
  • Public Health Nursing—Sheila Proctor, RN, MS, MPH, Associate Professor, UCSF School of Nursing, chairing a panel on “The Impact of ACA on Public Health Nursing,” Karen Hill, UCSF, Nurse Practitioner, Clinic Manager, Faculty Practice Guide Health Services, San Francisco. Plus speakers covering Advanced Practice Nurses/ACA/nurse- run clinics, and school nursing and the impact of the ACA.
  • Oral Health—Bob Isman, DDS, MPH, Dental Program Consultant for the California Department of Health Services, and Howard Pollick, BDS, MPH of UCSF School of of Dentistry discussing “Putting Teeth in the Affordable Care Act: Where Does Oral Health Fit In?
  • Community Health Workers—A panel on Community Health Workers, including Andrew Broderick, MA, MBA, Co-Director of the Center for Innovation and Technology in Public Health, Public Health Institute, speaking on a newly released report on the use of CHWs in community clinics in California, entitled “Taking Innovation to Scale: Community Health Workers, Promotores, and the Triple Aim.”
  • Public Health Education—Including a discussion by Debbie Oto-Kent, MPH, Executive Director, Healthy Sacramento Coalition and Barbara Alberson, MPH, Sr. Deputy Director, San Joaquin County Public Health.

This conference will also feature a Student Poster Contest, with cash prizes.
